Cattle Run Farm
Ruckersville, VA
0% interest loan funded March 2022
Cattle Run is a third generation, Black-owned family farm run Ralph and Sarah Morton in central Virginia. On roughly 150 acres acres, they raise and direct market an array of diversified products including grass-fed beef, forest-fed pork, eggs, thornless blackberries, and veggies. They also operate a mobile meat market and host visitors through AirBnb. “Our mission is to provide fresh and local foods to families and communities while contributing to the health and wellness of our future.” Ralph says that, “historically, lending institutions have not been friendly to the small marginalized minority and women farmers. [Lenders who would consider our applications for financing] wanted us to leverage our entire asset pool.” With the flexible, low-cost capital from their FoodCap loan—provided in part through funding from the Virginia Small Business Resiliency Fund—they will construct a farmstead to enhance their retail efforts, and purchase new cold storage to increase their processing capabilities and expand their market to a broader swath of the Piedmont region.
