Just outside Richmond, VA, Ash Hobson runs Hazel Witch Farm on property collaboratively farmed with two other female- and minority-owned operations. Her edible herbs and flowers are naturally grown with the intent of combatting the toxicity and carbon footprint so endemic to the heavily-imported floral industry. Ash was initially torn about “wasting garden space for things you can’t eat,” but now sees the importance of “nourishing all the parts of who we are,” believing “flowers should not only be for the privileged among us.” In addition to flowers, Ash—and her husband Patrick, a recent full-time addition—produce an array of medicinal herbs in the hopes of making Ayurvedic and herbal traditions more accessible for more people.
