Heartsong Herbs
Athens, GA
Low-interest loan funded Sept. 2024
Founded by Dana Nivens in 2017, Heartsong Herbs is a small farm and apothecary based in Athens, Georgia. With a background in organic and regenerative vegetable production, Dana began her herbalist journey cultivating herbs for her favorite tea blend; after several years of formal study, Heartsong Herbs was born.
Prioritizing regenerative practices, Heartsong Herbs grows a wide range of herbs for processing into tinctures on just over an acre. In addition to
direct-to-consumer and wholesale tincture sales, Heartsong also carries out twice yearly seedling sales offering over fifty varieties of herbs, as well as quarterly educational workshops focusing on regenerative agriculture and herbalism.
After seven years stewarding acreage leased from the Athens Land Trust, Heartsong Herbs successfully secured FSA financing and closed on property of its own. During fall of 2024, Dana will transition operations to the new property and prepare for cultivation in spring of 2025.
With this newly achieved land security, Heartsong Herbs is expanding their herb and value-added production, and launching regenerative vegetable production, with the goal of establishing a thirty-member CSA program in 2026. They will also hire an additional full-time staff person and begin the process of USDA organic certification.
A $50,000 loan from Foodshed Capital will allow Heartsong to purchase a
wash/pack building and greenhouse infrastructure, including heaters, fans, vents, and tables, and to cover costs of land grading, site preparation, electrical and plumbing for both structures.
