One Acre Farm
Rockville, MD
Low-interest bridge loan funded June 2024
One Acre Farm was launched by Michael Protas (Farmer Mike) in 2006 with a goal to build community around food, farming, and family. At its start, it operated on just one acre of rented land and served 25 people with a CSA program. Now, One Acre operates on 35 acres of owned land in Montgomery County's Agricultural Reserve, and produces diversified veggies that are Certified Naturally Grown and chemical-free. The farm is productive year-round, serving roughly 160 families while centering sustainability and regenerative practices in their ecosystem management.
One Acre Farm received a grant from the Maryland Healthy Soils Competitive Fund to purchase some new cover cropping equipment. A low-interest bridge loan from FoodCap helped them front the cost of the equipment ahead of grant reimbursement.
