Located in Petersburg, VA, a known food desert, the Petersburg Oasis CommUNITY Farm will provide public elementary and middle schools with nutrient-dense local food access, provide farm education for the student, work with Virginia State University to teach and engage students in agriculture, become an incubator farm for beginning farmers, and have an on-site produce stands within walking distance of the nearby residential homes. Duron Chavis and Tyrone Cherry III are the project leads who believe that every community deserves a flourishing multipurpose space focused on eradicating food insecurity and providing a source of healthy produce, especially in inner-city neighborhoods. With the support of a 0% interest loan from Foodshed Capital and an incredible coalition of partners, Agrarian Trust and the local Central Virginia Agrarian Commons have acquired the 5-acre farmland where the farm will grow and develop. This purchase will secure a 99-year lease for an enterprise owned by a Black farmer focused on food security and building a thriving Black agricultural space.
