Real Roots Food Systems is an urban farm focused on diversified veggies and niche Afro-Caribbean speciality crops just outside Richmond, VA. Founder Mark Davis aims to increase community participation in the food system through long-term volunteer opportunities that help educate participants and allow them to reclaim ownership of the food system. He also offers community composting and distributes produce through mutal aid. Working in collaboration with Shine Farms and Hazel Witch Farm (another FoodCap borrower), Real Roots is also implementing a new method of land tenure and converting what was previously an empty field full of wire grass into a regeneratively managed food farm. A 0% interest loan from Foodshed Capital allowed Real Roots to develop a dry processing area to ease local distribution of their food boxes.
