Princess Anne, MD
0% interest loan funded March 2022
The Delmarva Peninsula, also known as the Eastern Shore, embraces the state of Delaware and the Eastern Shore counties of Maryland and Virginia. Bounded on the west by the Chesapeake Bay and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, it is home to Tallawah Farms, a diversified veggie operation owned by Jamaican-born Nadine Burton and her two daughters. With a focus on heat tolerant, Afro-Caribbean speciality crops, Tallawah is meeting a need for niche cultural foods while increasing food access in a remote area of Maryland. Through a funding partnership with 4P Foods that supports Black-owned farms, Tallawah's loan funds will help them outfit four new high tunnels with with all the equipment needed to protect crops, mitigate pests, and extend the growing season.
