After a one-month break, our newsletter was back in August with an exciting announcement about a partnership in Pennsylvania to support the Farm Vitality Planning Grant program. Also, read about our latest loan in Virginia to Sylvanaqua Farm.

Our 24th loan to Verdant Acres Farm in the Shenandoah Valley is a true testament to the risk farmers take every day. We’re excited about the future of their farm, and about the future of our work with the support of so many people who understand the catalytic force of shared risk.

May 2020

Virginia Foodshed Capital earned distinction as a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). It becomes only the second CDFI nationwide solely devoted to food and farming. We’re excited by this opportunity to deepen and strengthen our commitment to financing the foodshed.

April 2020

Our 23rd loan was made this month to Creambrook Farm, a 100% grass-fed dairy in August County, selling raw milk shares. We’re proud of our accomplishments in the past two years as we celebrate our anniversary in May. But it’s only scratching the surface to address the needs and potential in our foodshed, as the COVID-19 is spotlighting.

March 2020

The COVID-19 crisis takes over our lives and has had a particularly disruptive impact on our local food system. Farmers show their resilience which is emblematic of the resiliency of our local food system in general. We made two more loans this month and are working with our farm partners to help them through the crisis.

February 2020

Regenerative agriculture is the focal point of our newest loan, made to Timshel Farm in Nelson County. So much of our work to this point has been with farms practicing regenerative agriculture, and we holding events later in the year to spread more awareness about it.

January 2020

The new year is off to a great start with two more loans, including our first one in Northern Virginia. We are looking forward to an incredible year ahead, with lots of new endeavors, including more training and education like the workshop we did at the VABF conference.

December 2019

We are so grateful for the generous contributions from all our supporters who helped us meet our year-end fundraising goals and lay the groundwork for a successful 2020. We are particularly appreciative of two grants from the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation.

November 2019

Our 15th and 16th loans bring the total value of our SOIL Loan portfolio to $104,000. We are excited about carrying our work forward into 2020.

October 2019

As we near our year-end, we are focused on raising more funds to support our SOIL Loan in the next year ahead. One of our financial supporters has offered a match on the next $10,000 we raise. Plus, more loans have been made and lots of other exciting happenings.

September 2019

This month we officially changed our name from Slow Money Virginia to Virginia Foodshed Capital. Read about the impetus behind the change, as well as our latest loan to Commune in Virginia Beach.
